چکیده

Web archives are useful resources to find out about the temporal evolution of persons, organizations, products, or other topics. However, even when advanced text search functionality is available, gaining insights into the temporal evolution of a topic can be a tedious task and often requires sifting through many documents. The demonstrated system named INZEIT (pronounced “insight”) assists users by determining insightful time points for a given query. These are the time points at which the top-k timetravel query result changes substantially and for which the user should therefore inspect query results. INZEIT determines the m most insightful time points efficiently using an extended segment tree for in-memory bookkeeping.

The mixing-MIR set with divisible capacities

We study the set S = {(x, y) ∈ + × Zn : x + Bjyj ≥ bj, j = 1, . . . , n}, where Bj , bj ∈ +−{0}, j = 1, . . . , n, and B1| · · · |Bn. The set S generalizes the mixed-integer rounding (MIR) set of Nemhauser and Wolsey and the mixing-MIR set of Günlük and Pochet. In addition, it arises as a substructure in general mixed-integer programming (MIP), such as in lot-sizing. Despite its importance, a n...

Efficiently Identifying Interesting Time Points in Text Archives

Large scale text archives are increasingly becoming available on the Web. Exploring their evolving contents along both text and temporal dimensions enables us to realize their full potential. Standard keyword queries facilitate exploration along the text dimension only. Recently proposed time-travel keyword queries enable query processing along both dimensions, but require the user to be aware ...

Using conditional inference forests to identify the factors affecting crash severity on arterial corridors.

INTRODUCTION The study aims at identifying traffic/highway design/driver-vehicle information significantly related with fatal/severe crashes on urban arterials for different crash types. Since the data used in this study are observational (i.e., collected outside the purview of a designed experiment), an information discovery approach is adopted for this study. METHOD Random Forests, which ar...

DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS WORKING PAPER SERIES Does Latino Population Induce White Flight? Evidence from Los Angeles County

Whether local minority population induces white flight to suburbs or private schools is a question of interest to many researchers. However, empirically identifying the causality is difficult due to residential sorting. Relying on a residential sorting model, I assume that people live in the same neighborhood are homogenous. I identify the effect of local Latino population on white flight by us...
